Exponential 2010

April 24th, 2010

This past week I got to go to Exponential 2010 a church planting conference in Orlando, Florida. There were all kinds of amazing people there at the conference that God is using to impact the kingdom in BIG ways! All kinds of church planters, networks, missionaries and leaders at Exponential10. I had some great interaction with some of the Church Planting Team from North American Mission Board at a dinner Monday night, Good Stuff!

I got to attend some super break out sessions lead by people like Ed Stetzer, Alan Hirsch, the guys from ARC, Dave Gibbons and others. I listened and learned from super speakers from the platform during the main sessions of Exponential. I got to go to dinner Tuesday night with Dr. Jim Haskell the director of the Urban Atlanta Church Planting group and the UACP’ers Tuesday, what a super group of people. Great conversation.

I had lunch Tuesday with my friend Dave Patterson and Zach from an amazing church plant in Gainesville, FL – River Cross Church. Dave Patterson was a BIG encouragement to me and took the picture above of me Dave Gibbons. The group I rode down to Orlando with was made up of Georgia Baptist Church Planters and leaders was good too! Wednesday night I went to dinner with my friend Brian Hook who works with Bob Roberts and Vision 360. I have know Brian over 20 years and he was a big encouragement to me.

I feel like I’m learning so much right now from God’s word and His Spirit about making a difference in the city Atlanta with the gospel. Thanks God for a sweet week! Now I want to make you famous all over the city of Atlanta, my marriage, my family, in the UACP.net, 1027church, and neighbors!

what a special week of loving our city

March 19th, 2010

this past week we had the privledge of having westwood baptist church student ministry send some of their best high schoolers, leaders and student pastor micah millican to serve the city of atlanta with the gospel in word and deed.

they arrived saturday and noni @1027church had a home made italian meal ready to feed the eager missionaries, we then entered a time of powerful prayer. sunday morning the westwood crew were just like veritan church planters and helped with set-up and break down of @1027church, picking up krsipy kreme’s and hauling the trailer, good stuff!

the student group worshipped every night where they stayed and had teaching on living as an urban missional person. micah milican and i tag teamed the teaching. good times. monday, tuesday, wednesday mornings a team called the brew crew got to brew more than 20 gallons of coffee to pass out for free at three strategic locations in the city (by the way there are tons of strategic places.)

after short debriefs at krisspy kreme monday – wednesday the students than went door to door collecting food for the atlanta community food bank and all kinds of great face to face opportunities to be Jesus to our city. On thursday the westwood crew picked up all the food from the neighborhoods they had canvased, to God be the glory people gave and they collected 1400 pounds of food.

monday through wednesday from 3-5:30 p.m. the westwood students volunteered at the boys and girls club at kirkwood helping with tutoring and recreations and some awesome snacks. both the students and leaders worked so hard and there literally was no down or waisted time as a matter of face with just a few hours left in the day thursday the students spent and hour and half prayer walking a neighborhood we would love to see God open some people’s hearts to having a personal relatiosnhip with Jesus Christ.

thanks pastor less, pastor rick and westwood church for sending your best to be the gospel in atlanta.

Does David Garrison have it Right?

December 1st, 2009

The following is taken from David Garrison’s book, Church Planting Movements.

What Is a Church Planting Movement?

In 1998, the International Mission Board’s Overseas Leadership Team adopted a vision statement: We will facilitate the lost coming to saving faith in Jesus Christ by beginning and nurturing Church Planting Movements among all peoples. This vision statement guides the work of nearly 5,000 IMB missionaries serving in more than 150 countries around the world.

So, what is a Church Planting Movement? A simple, concise definition of a Church Planting Movement (CPM) is a rapid and multiplicative increase of indigenous churches planting churches within a given people group or population segment.

There are several key components to this definition. The first is rapid. As a movement, a Church Planting Movement occurs with rapid increases in new church starts. Saturation church planting over decades and even centuries is good, but doesn’t qualify as a Church Planting Movement.

Secondly, there is an exponential increase. This means that the increase in churches is not simply incremental growth–adding a few churches every year or so. Instead, it compounds when two churches become four, and four churches become eight to ten, and so forth. Multiplicative growth is only possible when new churches are being started by the churches themselves–rather than by professional church planters or missionaries.

Finally, they are indigenous churches. This means they are generated from within rather than from without. This is not to say that the gospel is able to spring up intuitively within a people group. The gospel always enters a people group from the outside; this is the task of the missionary. However, in a Church Planting Movement the momentum quickly becomes indigenous so that the initiative and drive of the movement comes from within the people group rather than from outsiders.

If this definition isn’t enough, we might also clarify what a Church Planting Movement is not. A Church Planting Movement is more than “evangelism that results in churches.” Evangelism that results in churches is a part of a Church Planting Movement, but the “end-vision” is less extensive. A church planter might satisfy himself with the goal of planting a single church or even a handful of churches, but fail to see that it will take a movement of churches planting churches to reach an entire nation of people.

A Church Planting Movement is a rapid and
multiplicative increase of indigenous churches
planting churches within a given
people group or population segment.

A Church Planting Movement is also more than a revival of pre-existing churches. Revivals are highly desirable, but they’re not Church Planting Movements. Evangelistic crusades and witnessing programs may lead thousands to Christ, and that’s wonderful, but it isn’t the same as a Church Planting Movement. Church Planting Movements feature churches rapidly reproducing themselves.

Perhaps the closest thing to a Church Planting Movement, that still is not a Church Planting Movement, is when local church planters are trained and deployed to plant multiple churches among their own people. This is a highly productive method of spreading churches across a population segment or people group, but the momentum remains in the hands of a limited group of professional church planters rather than in the heart of each new church that is begun.

Finally, a Church Planting Movement is not an end in itself. The end of all of our efforts is for God to be glorified. This occurs whenever individuals enter into right relationship with Him through Jesus Christ. As they do, they are incorporated into churches which enable them to continue to grow in grace with other like-minded believers. Any time people come to new life in Jesus Christ, God is glorified. Any time a church is planted–no matter who does it–there are grounds for celebration.

So why is a Church Planting Movement so special? Because it seems to hold forth the greatest potential for the largest number of lost individuals glorifying God by coming into new life in Christ and entering into communities of faith.

However, a Church Planting Movement is not simply an increase in the number of churches, even though this also is positive. A Church Planting Movement occurs when the vision of churches planting churches spreads from the missionary and professional church planter into the churches themselves, so that by their very nature they are winning the lost and reproducing themselves.

What do you think let me know?

run it again

August 17th, 2009

i know not everybody is a big fan of sports, or specifically football, but let ramble a little bit about something most sports teams and for sure they do in football. they practice the same play over, and over and over again. as a matter of fact that is where the saying “run it again” come’s from.

in football they will practice the same play over, and over and over again, and when they are not excuting the play correctly the coach usually yells run it again or even run it again from the line, which simply means start it over from the line of scrimage. i can hear you saying so what?

the so what is that on game day the team is ready to play and has the opportunity to run their plays with perfection because they have run it again, and again and again. watching my son’s pee wee football team tonight run it again, and again and again the same play has to make you wonder what am i running again, and again and again in my life?

i heard a very amazing military leader once say when you have a plan you have to work your plan. i think sometimes maybe things do not work out and all of sudden you look to make a change instead of working your plan or running the play over. i’m not talking about being afraid to make a change or change something if it’s not productive. but maybe there are some things in my life that i need to “run it again.”
